Program Overview

This program prepares students for employment as paramedics to function at the advanced pre-hospital - paramedic level and treat various medical/trauma conditions, using appropriate equipment and materials. The program allows a student to advance their scope of practice as an out-of-hospital provider of emergency medical care. The program curriculum follows the National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards for Paramedic and the Florida Department of Education Curriculum Frameworks for Paramedic. Each course of the program is divided into three sections with requirements the student to ride on an ALS-permitted ambulance. At the completion of the program, the student will receive an Applied Technical Diploma and will meet the pre-requisites for the Florida paramedic certification examination.

Application Procedure

This program is limited to currently licensed NREMT or State of Florida EMTs.

The Paramedic Program is a Limited Access program. The program is limited to currently licensed NREMT or State of Florida EMTs. The program curriculum is designed for currently employed, shift-based Certified Firefighter/EMT Fire/Rescue Department personnel within the state of Florida to meet the professional requirements as a Paramedic to function at the pre-hospital, emergency technician level. To meet the minimum requirements for consideration for acceptance into the program, applicants must complete the following as instructed during the admission process:

  1. Be at least 18-years of age.

  2. Meet the FSCJ requirements as a Career Certificate program seeking student. Have a clock hour program application file with academic plan B393 selected.

  3. Complete the online Paramedic application by the published deadline and include a copy of current Florida EMT Certification or verification of EMT application from Medical Quality Assurance (MQA). Per 401.2701(1)(b) 2. F.S.: Paramedic programs must be available only to Florida-certified emergency medical technicians or an emergency medical technician applicant who will obtain Florida certification prior to completion of phase one of the paramedic program.

  4. ​Applicants are required to submit official transcripts from both high school/GED® and any postsecondary education. Transcripts must be officially sealed and sent directly from the awarding institution via electronic delivery to studentrecords@fscj.edu or via mail to FSCJ Admissions Office, PO Box 40515, Jacksonville, FL 32203.​​

  5. Upon application into the Paramedic program:

    1. Submit to a criminal background check (national).

    2. Submit to a drug screening.

    3. Submit to a physical examination.

    4. Provide proof of immunizations (rubella, German measles, mumps, varicella, H1N1 virus, hepatitis B, tuberculosis, and flu shot).

    5. Provide proof of current driver’s license.

    6. Provide proof of current personal injury protection (PIP) insurance coverage; and.

    7. Provide proof of current health insurance coverage.

    8. Provide proof of current Basic Life Support provider (BLS) card. The approved providers are as follows:

Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

Note: Admissions preference is given to fully qualified candidates who have met all entrance criteria. Should seats remain available in the program cohort, applicants who fulfill admissions criteria prior to the start of the program will be considered next.
