Description
This course introduces students to five core areas of linguistics--phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics/pragmatics--and their pedagogical applications. Students examine past and current research into language learning and second-language acquisition. Traditional and alternative methods of assessment for ELLs are addressed focusing on the teacher's role in making culturally relevant and informed decisions related to instruction and placement. In addition, the course examines the impact of home culture, dominant culture, and classroom culture on language teaching and learning with special attention given to their effects on literacy development. This course includes field experience activities.
