Description
The course consists primarily of the critical analysis of historically significant selected writings in which major philosophers assess the relation between the individual and the state, among other topics in social and political philosophy including rights, duties, justice, fairness, liberty, authority, autonomy, and community. The course is intended to provide students with an introduction to basic philosophical concepts which underlie political societies, and thus enable students to better understand and analyze practices and principles of social and political issues across notable historical periods within the Western canon, including Ancient Greece, Renaissance and Enlightenment traditions, and the development of modern democracies and republics across the globe. Students will critically examine the values and moral obligations of citizenship and the responsibilities of participating in organized society. This course includes reading and writing competencies.

This course fulfills the Gordon Rule writing requirement and must be completed with a grade of C or higher pursuant to State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.030.
