Adult Education Programs


Adult Education at Florida State College at Jacksonville includes a range of instructional programs that help adults acquire skills to become productive workers, family members, and citizens. Major program areas include English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), Adult High School (AHS), GED® Preparation: High School Equivalency (HSE), and Academic Skills Building (ASB). These programs emphasize basic skills such as reading, writing, math, and English language competency. Adult Education programs also assist adult learners in gaining the college and career readiness skills needed to enter and succeed in the workforce and/or postsecondary education.

Adult Education Admissions Requirements

To meet the minimum requirement for acceptance to adult education programs at Florida State College at Jacksonville, students must:

  1. Meet the General Admissions Eligibility Criteria.

  2. Meet the admissions requirements for Adult Education Programs:

    1. General admission for the High School Equivalency Adult Education program:

      1. Must be 18 years of age or older.

      2. Demonstrate reading proficiency at the 6th-grade level or higher.

    2. Applicants under the age of 18 may be admitted to the High School Equivalency Adult Education program if the applicant meets the following criteria:

      1. Demonstrate reading proficiency at the 6th-grade level or higher.

      2. Complies with their district’s withdrawal process.

      3. Completes the “Age Waiver” process with their local school district to register for the GED® test.

      4. Completes a “Special Admissions Form for Students Under 18 Years of Age” with their local school district stating that the individual has not been found guilty of any of the following offenses:

        1. Distribution of drugs

        2. Simple battery upon school employees or agents

        3. Robbery

        4. Extortion

        5. Burglary of school property

        6. Criminal mischief or vandalism

        7. Possession of weapons or dangerous objects

        8. Indecent public conduct

        9. Battery upon another student resulting in bodily harm

        10. Inciting or participating in a major student disorder

        11. Commission of any felony

    3. General Admission for Adult High School Adult Education Program:

      1. Must be 18 years old or older.

      2. Must require fewer than 10 credits to earn a standard high school diploma in the state of Florida.

      3. Must have a current high school grade point average of 1.7 or higher on a 4-point scale.

      4. Individuals must be seeking and have not already completed any high school completion credential.

Some adult education programs require specific admission criteria. Information pertaining to special admission criteria may be obtained on the program pages in this catalog.

Graduation Requirements

Note: Students are cautioned to pay particular attention to the following statements.

  • A student’s graduation date will be the date of the end of the College term in which the student has fulfilled all academic requirements.

  • Students who enter under the (2024/2025) catalog will be assigned to the degree or certificate requirements in effect during the 2024/2025 academic year. The student’s assigned catalog year will remain in effect as long as the student maintains continuous enrollment. Changes to requirements as mandated by law or by rule of the District Board of Trustees and FLDOE may supersede this provision.

  • Many courses in this catalog have prerequisite requirements listed in the course descriptions. Students are advised to be guided by these requirements.

English for Speakers of Other Languages Graduation Requirements

To be awarded a certificate of completion, students must have met the following requirements.

  1. Fulfill all obligations, financial or otherwise, to the College before graduating.

  2. Score out of ESOL Level 6 in both Reading and Listening on a State-approved, College-preferred assessment.

Adult Basic Education Graduation Requirements

To be awarded a certificate of completion, students must have met the following requirements.

  1. Fulfill all obligations, financial or otherwise, to the College before graduating.

  2. Score out of ABE Level 4 on a State-approved, College-preferred assessment.

Adult High School Graduation Requirements

To be awarded a certificate of completion, students must have met the following requirements.

  1. Fulfill all obligations, financial or otherwise, to the College before graduating.

  2. Complete requirements for adult high school students (per State Board Rule 6A-6.020) as specified in the Florida Course Code Directory and the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) Adult High School Technical Assistance paper.

  3. Complete and earn a minimum of two (2) high school credits at FSCJ to meet graduation requirements (including increasing the student’s grade point average and passing the state-approved assessment) and receive a State of Florida standard diploma.

GED® Preparation: High School Equivalency Program Graduation Requirements

To be awarded a certificate of completion, students must have met the following requirements.

  1. Fulfill all obligations, financial or otherwise, to the College before graduating.

  2. Pass the full battery (Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science and Social Studies) of the 2014 GED® test with the required minimum passing score of 145.

Academic Skills Building Graduation Requirements

To be awarded a certificate of completion, students must have met the following requirements.

  1. Fulfill all obligations, financial or otherwise, to the College before graduating.

  2. Obtain placement into a College credit program or an industry certification.
