Academic and Social Organizations
Numerous campus student organizations are available at Florida State College at Jacksonville. Some of the organizations include Phi Theta Kappa, an organization which recognizes academic achievement; Forensic Team and the Brain Bowl Team. Other organizations available are based on career, major or personal and social interests. Campus Student Life and Leadership Offices provide assistance to those interested in starting new organizations. Student Life and Leadership Offices also offer support for existing organizations to ensure compliance with college policies and procedures related to financial transactions, student organization discipline procedures, student travel, and the use of college vehicles.
Campus Community Engagement Opportunities
Florida State College at Jacksonville students contribute a tremendous amount of time and effort to making a difference in the northeast Florida community. Student volunteer coordinators connect students with a variety of organizations seeking volunteers and keep track of students’ volunteer hours. The student volunteer coordinator, a student position, can be contacted through each of the Academic Collaborations Offices.
Student Government Association
Each campus has a Student Government Association (SGA) that is recognized as the official student organization representing students at the College. Each campus SGA is charged with the responsibility of participating in the College’s governing process through the student, faculty and administrative campus councils. Each campus SGA also participates in the SGA executive board, thus coordinating the College wide needs of students. Each campus SGA is a member of the statewide Florida College System Student Government Association.
Student Leadership Program
The Student Life and Leadership Office provides a variety of leadership development programs for students. Programs emphasize general leadership skills or students may apply for the opportunity to become a Certified Peer Educator.
In addition, retreats and workshops which incorporate low ropes courses and other outdoor activities are presented at Florida State College at Jacksonville’s Nassau Center, a 40-acre wooded site in Yulee complete with everything needed for a weekend retreat. Timely topics and fun experiential learning exercises help to develop student leadership skills.
A diverse program of intercollegiate athletics is available at the College. Basketball (men’s and women’s), tennis (women’s) and volleyball (women’s) are sports activities based at the South Campus. North Campus is the location for baseball and softball.
Students may participate in the College-wide intercollegiate athletic program regardless of the campus where they attend classes. The director of athletics and physical education oversees the recruitment, eligibility and financial assistance of student athletes. Florida State College at Jacksonville is a member of the Mid-Florida Conference of the Florida College System Activities Association and the National Junior College Athletic Association.
The College provides both group and individualized intramural/recreational activities. Activities may include flag football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis, table tennis, and billiards. Special discount passes to a variety of community recreational facilities, including bowling, movies, and JTA bus passes, are available for purchase in the Campus Student Financial Services Offices.
In addition to intramural/extramural activities, the College provides a student lounge for relaxing on each campus. The student lounge is a place to unwind and make friends while playing billiards, ping pong, video games or watching television. For the fitness-minded, Downtown, Kent, Open Campus/Deerwood Center and South Campuses offer a fitness center where you may work out with exercise and weight-training equipment.
Variety is the key word in describing the many opportunities offered on campus. From singers and dancers to lectures, discussions and art displays, a long list of cultural activities appears on the Florida State College at Jacksonville stage and other venues. Many of these opportunities have direct connections with your classroom studies and event details can be found in the online college calendar.
The College prohibits any action or situation that recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student. Students and organizations are prohibited from engaging in any form of hazing either on or off campus.
Student Assistance Program
Florida State College at Jacksonville has created the Student Assistance program to provide students with the resources they need to cope with college-related, personal, legal or financial issues that may be affecting their studies and their ability to be your best. Services are free and confidential and are available in-person, online or by phone (855) 384-1800 (toll-free).
Student Handbill Procedures
Any individual or organization wishing to distribute handbills while on College property may do so as approved by the Campus President. Each Campus President will provide a designated area for the activity. Specific guidelines are available in the Campus President’s Office.
